Radiant heat is a popular add-on to warm up your new tile floor. And, because it is so cozy and comfortable under foot, it is quickly becoming an option under many other types of flooring. Radiant heat mats come either in individual pieces or in pre-sized kits, like SunTouch's Floor Warming TapeKits, complete with programmable thermostats and accessories. Some kits, such as Schluter Systems' Ditra-Heat, double as a decoupling membrane to eliminate potential cracking in the tile or grout lines from temperature variation. The overall installation cost can be high, though the cost of operation is normally lower than heating the space with traditional forced-air systems.
All systems, though typically installed by the licensed flooring contractor as part of the tile project, require a licensed electrician to complete the final testing and hookup to the thermostat in order to confirm proper operation and to maintain the full manufacturer's warranty.
